Correctly applying the CRF and Deposit on invoice or receipt to your customer
Effective June 20, 2024, Bill C-59 became law and introduced new pricing transparency requirements for businesses. One important update involves the Container Recycling Fee (CRF):
- The CRF must now be included in the advertised “headline price”—this is the price that consumers see on shelf labels, promotional signage, or online listings. This change ensures full pricing transparency and compliance with federal consumer protection rules.
- This rule does not apply to the deposit fee, which must continue to be displayed separately.
In British Columbia, under the Recycling Regulation, Schedule 1, Section 5(2):
“The deposit required by subsection (1) must be shown on the purchaser's receipt if a receipt is given.”
When issuing a receipt or invoice to a customer in BC, the deposit should appear as a separate line item, clearly labeled (e.g., “Bottle Deposit” or “Container Deposit”).
The "deposit" must be shown separately on all invoices in your supply chain. If your company is getting invoices without a deposit line, please discuss with your supplier and contact Return-It at brandregistry@returnit.ca
