Refillable Brand Scan
In 2024, Encorp conducted a scan of its registered brand owners to identify any emerging trends towards the use of refillable beverage containers within British Columbia. The scan consisted of a review of websites and news releases for the top 30 brand owners who sell ready-to-drink beverages in British Columbia. In addition to the brand owner scan, a survey was sent out to all registered brand owners to identify organizations that are currently using or have plans to move towards refillable beverage containers and to identify any barriers in providing refillable solutions.
Brand Scan Results
The brand scan found no brands that are currently registered as part of the Return-It system are offering refillable container options in British Columbia. However, there are some efforts being made globally within reusable packaging. One of the key findings from the scan is that several of Encorp’s registered brand owners have made significant commitments to increase the use of recycled content in the plastic beverage containers they sell into the BC and global markets.
Brand Owner Survey Results
The survey consisted of 3 questions and was distributed to all brand owners. Thank you to the 55 brand owners that took the time to complete the survey. Below are the survey results:
- Does your company have any plans to package and sell beverages in refillable containers in British Columbia or other Canadian Provinces in the next 3-5 years?

- What, if any are the barriers in providing refillable solutions for the beverage products you sell into the British Columbia market?
Top three barriers identified: cost, infrastructure & sanitation, consumer behaviour - Is your company conducting any collaborative or pilot projects using refillable packaging for beverage containers?
