Protein Drinks are Part of the Return-It System

Did you know that supplemented beverages are now part of the Return-It system?

Health Canada has recently introduced new regulations mandating beverage producers to carry on the label "Supplemented" indicator if they contain supplemental ingredients.

As a result, many ready-to-drink beverages are now bearing the “Supplemented” indicator on their labels.

This change has particularly impacted nutritional drinks such as protein shakes, which were previously exempt from regulation as they were labeled as "Nutritional Supplements." Some of these products no longer bear the nutritional supplement label and now display the Health Canada "Supplemented" indicator (see below).

If a product's label has changed from "nutritional supplement" to "supplemented”, it is possible the product no longer qualifies as a nutritional supplement under the Food and Drug Regulations (FDR). Consequently, these products should be registered with Encorp as soon as possible.

In case you have any doubts about whether a particular product should be part of the Return-It system, you can always reach out to the Brand Registry team at brandregistry@returnit.ca.
